Jonathan Elliotson, Trumpet

Jonathan Elliotson is the youngest of 5 children in a very musical family. Under the teaching of his father, he started piano when he was three and trumpet when he was eight. After achieving Grade 8 Piano with the Royal Conservatory of Music, he shifted his focus to the trumpet. Most of his learning came from playing alongside his father and doing concerts, church services, weddings and many more engagements together.

In 2009, he became co-principal cornet with the Hannaford Youth Band, Daryl Eaton, Conductor, and began studying trumpet with Anita McAlister. That year he won Hannaford's "Rising Stars" solo competition, adjudicated by American trumpet virtuoso, Allen Vizzutti. This performance gained him a scholarship and a performance with the Hannaford Street Silver Band.

In 2011, Jonathan began studies in music performance at the University of Toronto, and also performed with Orchestra Toronto. 2012 was an exciting year for competing, first at the Toronto Kiwanis Music Festival, then at the Provincials, and finally at the Nationals winning first prize and scholarships at each level.

In 2012-13 Jonathan performed with the excellent U of T Symphony, Orchestra Toronto, was principal cornet in the Hannaford Youth Band, and in April of 2013, he again won Hannaford SSB’s “Rising Stars” solo competition, subsequently presenting his prize-winning solo at the St Lawrence Centre with the Hannaford under guest conductor, Alain Trudel.

During his two years at U of T, Jonathan has had the honour of working with people like Andrew McCandless, principal trumpet with the TSO, Canadian trumpet legend Johnny Cowell, and the Canadian Brass.

In the summers of 2012 and 2013, Jonathan was a member of the colourful Band of the Ceremonial Guard, performing daily for the Changing of the Guard on Parliament Hill, Ottawa.

Now in his third year at university, Jonathan's passion for music is ever growing, and he is constantly excited to pursue his dream of becoming an orchestral trumpet player.
